61. Introduction to Nonprofits (A)

Overview

Before diving into the specifics of grant writing (64.b), it's important to first understand what a nonprofit organisation is and the unique challenges it faces. A nonprofit is a type of organisation that operates primarily for charitable, educational, or social purposes, and does not distribute profits to private individuals or shareholders. Instead, any surplus revenue is reinvested into the organisation to further its mission. Nonprofits can vary in size, from small community-based organisations to large global entities, but all share a common goal: to make a positive impact in the world.

While nonprofits play an essential role in society by addressing issues such as poverty, education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability, they operate under a distinct financial framework that comes with its own set of challenges. For example, nonprofits must maintain transparency in their financial practices and demonstrate accountability to both donors and the public. They must also comply with specific regulatory requirements to maintain their tax-exempt status, such as ensuring that any funds raised are used exclusively for charitable purposes.
